FAQ

Why a “Red Thread?”
We draw inspiration from the sacred red threads that bring people together and symbolize courage in Buddhist and Hindu traditions. Our goal is to create a strong network of women who have come together from diverse parts of the world to support each other in leading remarkable, empowered, and fulfilling lives.

How is the fellowship funded?
The fellowship is funded by personal contributions from the trustees.

What can I use the fellowship award money for?
Anything related to your education – tuition, books, a laptop, travel and living expenses.

Is there a GPA (grade point average) requirement?
While we do not consider grades as part of your application, we do require that one of your recommendation letters come from an academic reference who can speak to your scholastic abilities, achievements, and ambitions.

Do I need to be a U.S. resident to apply?
No. We encourage U.S. and non-U.S. residents who will be entering an American college or university program to apply.  If you are an international student, however, the scholarship award will only be disbursed upon your arrival to the United States.

Will my information be kept confidential?
The foundation will never sell or share your information, including your mailing or email address. Though we intend to feature our fellow’s names, photos, and accomplishments, the details of your personal story will not be shared without your approval. Please contact us to see our privacy policy.

Is the fellowship award renewable beyond my first year of college?
At this time, the scholarship award is not automatically renewable. This may change as the foundation grows.

I have already begun my studies in a U.S. college or university. Can I still apply?
The Red Thread Fellowship is currently available only to first year entrants to a college or university program. We understand the need to finance your education beyond the first year, so we have listed several other scholarships on our resources page.

Does the mentorship component of the program continue beyond my fellowship year?
Though formal strategic planning and personal coaching occurs only during your fellowship year, you will become a part of the Red Thread Network upon completion of the program and will continue to enjoy its benefits.

Can I join the foundation as a trustee or a mentor?
Yes, we are actively recruiting new members to join us after the pilot phase. Contact us for more information.

If I run an organization, write a blog, or have a website supporting women, is there a possibility to partner with you?
We welcome initiatives that support the advancement of women. Please contact us to discuss any potential partnership opportunities.

Can I donate to the Red Thread Foundation for Women? Are my donations tax deductible?
As of October 2013, the Red Thread Foundation for Women is a tax-exempt, 501(c)3 non-profit organization!  If you are interested in supporting our work, please contact us.
